Self Managed Superannuation Funds – SMSF

A Self Managed Superannuation Fund, better known as SMSF has become the fastest-growing segment of the superannuation industry.

What is a SMSF?

A SMSF is essentially a trust structure that can have between one to four members (beneficiaries). The trust must comply with the rules and regulations for operating a superannuation fund in order to gain the tax benefits associated with superannuation.

Things to consider:

The most popular reasons for establishing your own SMSF include:

  • Control – You and up to three other members can take full control of your superannuation
  • Flexibility – As you are in control, you have greater flexibility over the investment options. This may include taking incorporating property and other assets into your SMSF
  • Cost effective – A SMSF particularly for larger funds can be cost effective to administer compared to traditional retail superannuation funds.

Conversely, it is easy to get lost in the current hype of SMSFs and not fully consider if a SMSF is right for you. While the SMSF will offer greater control and flexibility you need to also consider:

  • Additional responsibility – You ultimately take responsibility for the administration of the SMSF. Errors can be very costly and it can be time consuming.
  • Cost – Smaller SMSF need to go through the same process as a large fund. This can result in a relatively high cost for a small fund, when compared to alternative options.
  • Greater scrutiny – With the popularity of SMSF increasing so too has the scrutiny of the funds.
